Mount Whitney climb – 2012

August 15, 2012

Nearly a week ago (last Thursday), I made what has become an annual trip – 4 years in a row – to Mt. Whitney to attempt to reach the summit. It was a difficult hike, but I persevered and made it to the top for the second time. I camped for a few days at altitude, June Lake for one day and two days with friends at Whitney Portal Campground. I began the hike at 3:15 am, reached the summit just before noon and got back to my truck at the trailhead at 7:00 pm. I covered 21.4 miles and climbed about 6,200′. (Starting elev: 8300′, summit: 14,996′). I was able to take usable photos starting at about 5:45 a.m., about 30 minutes before sunrise. I share them with you in gallery form. In my next post, I’ll put together a narrative and include some of my pre and post-hike photos.

Thanks Kyle, I appreciate the compliment. Hope you had good weather. It was a bit dodgy when I was there and the ensuing days looked a bit iffy.

  3. Good job Victor, congratulations. You look very happy. Loved the photos.

Thanks Sherri, Although exhausted at the top of the mountain, I was elated and the entire trip (the drive through the Sierras, camping with friends, and the hike itself) was everything I’d hoped for.
